Book Review: Children's Advent Stories for Bedtime

I’m fussy about children’s books. And especially fussy when it comes to children’s books that include themes of faith. But every now and then a Christian children's book comes along that I not only like, but totally love.  Julie and David Lavender’s Children’s Advent Stories for Bedtime: celebrate the true meaning of Christmas is one of those books. And because I love it so much, I made sure I posted this review quickly so you’ve got time to grab a copy for your family before December arrives!
But, ‘What’s so great about it?’ I hear you ask. ‘Isn’t this just another sickly sweet advent book for kids?’ Well, I can assure you there's nothing gimmicky about this book.
What this advent book offers is a lovely combination of ideas: advent + bedtime stories + child focused Bible studies + conversation questions + genuine prayers. The book opens with a gentle introduction and some suggestions on how to create calming bedtime routines. Given how exciting and busy (let’s be real: hectic!) the lead up to Christmas can be, this is a great way to set the tone of the book.

There’s one story (+ study, questions and prayer) for each day from the 1st to the 25th of December (Christmas Day!).
Each story opens with a gentle illustration by Shahar Kober. I really appreciated his style and colour palette for this book.
But what I really loved about this book was how solidly these Christmas bedtime stories were grounded in the overarching narrative of Scripture. There are Bible references listed after the heading of each chapter (in case parents want to dive deeper), and mentions of the Biblical text all the way through. From creation, the fall and Jesus’ flawed ancestors, through to more traditional Christmas stories of angels and shepherds, the wonder of God’s love and the invitation to trust him is beautifully woven.
Regardless of it’s topic, each story remains true to the Biblical text. Tricky words are explained without losing the bedtime story tone and the Bible studies with questions allow moments of authentic application, inviting children (and their adults) to draw closer to Jesus as Christmas approaches. This book is an advent discipleship journey, structured around special bedtime moments.

You know it’s a special children’s book when the stories and lessons are layered enough to be meaningful for many different readers and age groups. That's what this book does with simple but beautiful writing, thoughtful faith engagement, accurate Biblical teaching and inviting presentation. Yep. I love this book!

I'm fussy about children's books too! That's why I love all of Julie Lavender's books. This one is right up there with its quality of writing and production.

I agree, it's such a high quality book. One that will be a keepsake, no doubt. Glad I'm not the only fussy one when it comes to children's books!

    The Penny Drops

In high school I used to write what I'd call 'thinks' - little bits of writing about whatever topic or issue I was mulling over at the time. I still write these little pieces.
I also blog a little and offer reviews of books I consider worth reading. All of these - thinks, blogs, reviews - I gather here. They're the writing that happens when the 'penny drops', or it doesn't, and I sit down with pen (or laptop) in hand...
    I hope you enjoy them.
