‘Can anything separate me from God’s love?’ And so begins this delightful picture book. Nothing: nothing can separate you from God’s love, is a hardcover picture book written by Natalie Creech and illustrated by Joseph Cowman. It’s probably obvious from the title that the book is based on the familiar passage in Romans 8 and this verse sets the tone of the rhyming text. Moving from question to answer - with all the imaginative adventures that could include along the way - children are introduced to the scope of God’s love and the extent of his grace. The illustrations are, of course, a major attraction of this book. Cowman has managed to capture the wonder, excitement and wild imagination of childhood as the text moves through various scenarios. From geographical and meteorological obstacles, to more personal encounters with failing and disappointment, this book encourages readers to trust the surety of God’s love. What I loved about this book was the way the pictures and text complimented each other with such depth of emotion and truth. Although one or two of the rhymes felt a tiny bit forced, it wasn’t enough to detract from the flow. And with each round of questioning, there was a valuable reassurance: ‘There is nothing so powerful, nothing so strong - God’s love is too high and too deep and too long’. I could only include a couple of photos in this blog post, but if you get a chance to read a copy of your own, make sure you take time to appreciate the fabulous expressions on the child characters’ faces! They are SO cute, and on target too. I mean, how many times in life do we consider our surroundings and wonder whether we are really, truly held in God’s care? And how many times do we need to be reminded that we are ‘loved and forgiven. What a wonderful thing. You’re adopted as God’s own. You’re a child of the King!’
